OpenAI Introduces Latest A.I. Agent Designed for Research

OpenAI has unveiled a new A.I. tool called Deep Research that promises to revolutionize the way information is gathered and synthesized from the internet. The tool, demonstrated in Washington after its release, can tackle complex research tasks in a fraction of the time it would take a person, making it ideal for fields such as finance, science, and law.

The technology, referred to as an A.I. agent, is capable of gathering information from a variety of sources, including text, images, and PDFs. It can generate detailed reports on a given topic, as demonstrated when it compiled a report on Albert Einstein for a hypothetical Senate staff member during a congressional hearing.

Although the tool has the potential to accelerate economic growth, there are concerns about its accuracy. A.I. technologies like Deep Research can sometimes provide incorrect information, known as “hallucination.” OpenAI acknowledges that the tool may struggle to distinguish between authoritative information and rumors, as well as accurately convey uncertainty.

Deep Research is accessible through OpenAI’s ChatGPT Pro subscription service, which costs $200 a month. It is based on the same neural network technology that powers ChatGPT and utilizes the company’s latest reasoning technology, OpenAI o3. Despite its capabilities, OpenAI is to navigate ongoing legal challenges related to copyright infringement.

Overall, Deep Research represents a significant advancement in A.I. technology, offering a powerful tool for efficient information synthesis and research.
