Five individuals face charges in a cheating scandal that benefited more than 200 unqualified Texas teachers.

A massive scheme involving over 200 “unqualified teachers” obtaining jobs or promotions at schools in Texas through the use of impersonators taking certification exams for them has been uncovered by prosecutors. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office announced on Monday that five individuals have been charged in connection with the scheme, which netted them at least $1 million.

Vincent Grayson, a basketball coach at Booker T. Washington High School in Houston, has been identified as the mastermind behind the operation. Educators seeking certification paid around $2,500 to have their exams taken by impersonators at testing centers. At least 400 tests were fraudulently completed, resulting in over 200 teachers falsely certified.

The other individuals charged include an assistant principal at Booker T. Washington High School, a testing center employee, a corrupt proctor, and an assistant principal at Jack Yates High School in Houston. All five face charges of engaging in organized criminal activity, with potential sentences ranging from two years to life in prison.

Vincent Grayson’s lawyer, Cheryl E. Irvin, has declined to comment on the case, stating that she is awaiting further information. Grayson is set to appear in court on Friday. The extent of the scheme is still being investigated, but it is clear that a significant number of teachers were able to secure positions through fraudulent means.
