New agreement grants Texas National Guard authority to detain migrants

In an exclusive interview with CBS News Texas, Governor Greg Abbott announced that for the first time, Texas National Guard members will have the authority to arrest migrants crossing into the state illegally. This new authority comes as part of an agreement with the Trump administration to allow the National Guard to enforce immigration laws, providing much-needed support to federal immigration officers who are short-staffed under the Biden administration.

Governor Abbott also discussed his recent request to Congress to reimburse Texas for the $11.1 billion spent on border security measures. He emphasized that the border wall and other barriers built in Texas are assets that benefit the entire country and should be repaid. He noted that President Trump and key Republicans in Congress support this request, with legislation introduced by Rep. Dan Crenshaw and co-sponsored by Rep. Jake Ellzey to provide reimbursement to states like Texas.

In response to Governor Abbott’s request for reimbursement, there has been strong support from members of Congress, both Republican and Democrat. The governor will be traveling to Washington, D.C., to further advocate for reimbursement and work on securing funding for border security measures. The interview highlighted the ongoing efforts by Texas to address immigration issues and secure the border, with Governor Abbott emphasizing the importance of federal support in these efforts.
