A woman from California recently shared her experience of moving to Texas in search of freedom from COVID-19 vaccine mandates, only to return after four months due to high expenses and an overwhelming focus on politics. Kellee Speakman, 50, moved with her family to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, but quickly realized that Texas was not as cheap as she had been led to believe. Despite the absence of income taxes, she found property taxes to be “horrific” and services to be more expensive than in California. Speakman also found the political obsession in Texas to be exhausting, with constant discussions and pressure to vote a certain way. She appreciated California’s focus on public spaces, income for teachers, and health benefits upon her return. Ultimately, her experience in Texas helped her see that every state, regardless of political leaning, has its drawbacks. In conclusion, she remarked that no place is perfect and that she returned to California with a greater appreciation for what her home state has to offer.
