Federal agents conducted early morning raids in Denver and Aurora to detain and arrest suspected members of the Venezuelan gang known as Tren de Aragua. The Enforcement and Removal Operations team of ICE targeted individuals believed to be involved in criminal activities. President Trump has criticized Denver and Aurora for being too welcoming to illegal immigrants and has promised a crackdown on immigration.
One individual, Fernando Martinez, described how he was startled by police breaking down the door of the apartment where he was staying. The authorities utilized disorientation devices during the raid. ICE did not disclose the exact number of people arrested during the operation.
The agency had initially planned widespread raids in the area last week but canceled due to excessive publicity. Acting ICE Director Caleb Vitello explained that they are forced to conduct operations in communities because they do not receive the required cooperation from local jails. Martinez and his friends were briefly detained during the search for drugs, which were not found in the apartment.
Community members and religious leaders like Rabbi Rachel Kobrim showed their support for residents affected by the raids and called for unity to protect their neighbors and coworkers. The situation is still unfolding, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
