Tywana Gilford Mason, an employee at Houston Training and Education Center, has been charged in connection with a teacher certification cheating scandal in Harris County. Court documents reveal that Mason allowed a man, identified as Nicholas Newton, to take certification tests on her behalf in exchange for bribes totaling about $125,000 from Vincent Grayson, a basketball coach at Booker T. Washington High School. Grayson, also known as the “Kingpin,” allegedly made $1.9 million from the scheme, which involved more than 400 instances of fraudulent testing mainly from Dallas area teacher candidates.
Three Houston Independent School District educators, including Grayson, are implicated in this cheating ring. The DA’s office is working to investigate the scheme and ensure that any teacher who obtained certification fraudulently will be terminated, with qualified replacements taking their place.
Mason is facing charges of engaging in organized criminal activity in connection with the scandal. This case is part of ongoing efforts to root out fraud and corruption in the education system. For more updates on this case, follow Mo Haider on social media.
