Kosovo’s ruling Vetevendosje party, led by Prime Minister Albin Kurti, won the country’s parliamentary election with almost 42% of the votes, but will need to negotiate a coalition to form a government. Kurti initially said he would not form a coalition but later changed his stance. Kurti’s popularity has been boosted by extending government control in the country’s ethnic Serb-majority north, but critics say he has failed to deliver on education and health services. The EU has imposed economic sanctions on Kosovo for stoking tensions with ethnic Serbs, cutting funding by at least 150 million euros. Despite challenges, Kurti’s government has made progress in reducing unemployment and increasing the minimum wage. The election campaign was marked by acrimony, with numerous complaints and fines issued by the Elections Complaints and Appeals Panel. The opposition Democratic League of Kosovo has acknowledged Vetevendosje’s victory. The election results show a decline from the party’s performance in 2021 but still put Kurti in a strong position to lead the next government. Kosovo, Europe’s newest country, gained independence in 2008 with backing from the United States. The full election results were delayed due to technical issues but are expected to be announced early on Monday.
