A vehicle explosion near El Paso International Airport ignited a large fire on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in more than half a dozen injuries. The El Paso Fire Department responded to the incident at the Sun Metro Transit Operations Center, with over 100 firefighters and 40 fire units on the scene. The fire escalated to a second alarm, causing the roof and walls of the building to collapse. Seven patients were assessed, with four taken to area hospitals. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported. At 7 p.m., the fire was extinguished, and crews were checking for hot spots. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, with details limited at this time. El Paso Police Department assisted at the scene and urged locals to avoid the area. Traffic was closed at Montana Avenue and Wedgewood Drive. El Paso International Airport operations were not affected by the incident. A category 4 fire is considered very dangerous by the US Forestry Service, with the potential to spread rapidly and persist for a long time. The community extended their gratitude to first responders for their swift action in addressing the situation.
