Texas-based pet microchip company Save This Life has suddenly closed, causing concern among veterinarians and pet owners. The closure means that pets registered with the company will no longer have their owner’s information attached to the chip’s identifier number, potentially complicating efforts to reunite lost pets with their families.
The American Animal Hospital Association has removed Save This Life from its registry and is advising pet owners to contact their veterinarians to ensure their pets are registered with a legitimate provider in case they go missing. Although microchips registered with Save This Life will still function normally, they will need to be re-registered with another company.
The reasons for the sudden closure of Save This Life remain unclear. The Texas Secretary of State’s website indicates that the company’s registration status is listed as “inactive” due to a tax forfeiture, leading to the end of its right to do business in the state.
In response to the closure, BuddyID is temporarily offering free registration for affected pet owners, while other options include paid services like Home Again and Pet Link, or FreePetChipRegistry.com. Veterinarians are encouraged to contact their clients with pets registered with Save This Life to inform them of the situation.
Microchips are crucial in reuniting lost pets with their families, so it is important for pet owners to ensure their pets are registered with a reliable provider. The sudden closure of Save This Life serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining up-to-date contact information for microchipped pets.
