Principal and teachers from an Arlington charter school detained in child abuse probe

The Arlington community was shocked by the recent arrests of three individuals connected to Newman International Academy on charges of child abuse and related offenses. Two teachers were arrested on charges of inappropriate behavior and child grooming, while the principal was accused of attempting to cover up the allegations against them.

The investigation began when two seventh-grade girls came forward with allegations against the teachers, leading to warrants being issued and arrests made. Principal Richard Adams was subsequently arrested on charges including failure to report abuse, tampering with evidence, and tampering with a witness.

The school has placed several other educators on leave pending the outcome of both criminal and internal investigations. District officials emphasized a zero-tolerance policy regarding abuse and cover-up actions, stating that the safety and well-being of students is their top priority.

Police Chief Matthew Antkowiak noted that there may be additional victims connected to the individuals charged, and the investigation is ongoing. He also mentioned that the department is working closely with federal and state investigators, suggesting that the scope of the case may extend beyond Texas.

Newman International Academy serves approximately 3,000 students across seven campuses and was founded in 2010. The school has its own police force, which is leading the investigation. Dr. Sheba George, the school superintendent, reiterated the commitment to rooting out exploitation or abuse of students and holding accountable those who neglect or harm them.
