Texas hires Greg Nyhoff, former Vallejo city manager known for controversy

Former Vallejo City Manager Greg Nyhoff, who left Vallejo amid corruption allegations and police department scandals, has been hired as the acting chief executive of Mount Pleasant, Texas. The Mount Pleasant City Council unanimously selected Nyhoff as the interim city manager with an annual base salary of $120,000. Nyhoff, who moved to a nearby small town a couple of years ago, spoke at a recent council meeting stating that he was not actively seeking a job but was encouraged by his pastor to apply for the position.

Nyhoff’s departure from Vallejo in 2021 came amidst mounting scandals, including a $600,000 severance package from the city council. Three former Vallejo employees sued Nyhoff, alleging wrongful termination and misconduct related to a controversial land deal on Mare Island shipyard. The city settled with one plaintiff for $1 million, but the other two lawsuits are headed to trial.

Nyhoff’s time in Vallejo was also plagued by police department turmoil, including a badge-bending ritual to commemorate shootings and allegations of cover-ups and retaliation against whistleblowers. These issues led to a settlement with a former police captain and a lawsuit by the California Attorney General to impose reforms on the department.

In his new role in Mount Pleasant, Nyhoff aims to understand the city administration better and improve the municipal budget. He expressed his commitment to the community and helping through God’s grace at the recent city council meeting.
