One person has died and multiple police officers were injured in an “Islamist terror act” knife attack in Mulhouse, eastern France. The suspect, who is on a terror watchlist, first attacked municipal police officers while shouting “Allahu Akbar”. A civilian passer-by who tried to intervene was fatally injured. The incident is being investigated as a terror attack, with President Macron calling it an “Islamist terrorist act”. The suspect, born in Algeria, was under judicial supervision and facing an expulsion order. Macron and Prime Minister Bayrou expressed condolences to the victims and their families, with Macron pledging to eradicate terrorism on French soil. Prosecutors have taken charge of the investigation and are looking into the attack as murder and attempted murder “in connection with a terrorist enterprise”. The FSPRT watchlist, aimed at preventing radicalization, has been in place since 2015. The injured police officers, one with a carotid artery injury and the other with a thorax injury, are in serious condition. Interior Minister Retailleau is expected to visit the scene later. Military units were deployed for security, and forensic scientists are collecting evidence. The mayor of Mulhouse described the incident as “horror” and the nation is in mourning over the attack.
