Man sentenced to 100 years in prison for murder of Dutch soldier

Shamar Duncan has been sentenced to over 100 years in prison for the fatal shooting of Dutch soldier Simmie Poetsema in downtown Indianapolis in 2022. The shooting occurred during a confrontation involving alcohol and guns, which resulted in Poetsema’s death and injuries to his comrades. Duncan was found guilty of murder, attempted murder, and aggravated battery following a trial. Witnesses said the Dutch soldiers were antagonized by Duncan and others, leading to a fight and ultimately the shooting. Duncan apologized in court, stating he acted out of fear. Police identified him as the shooter through videos and surveillance footage. The soldiers were visiting Indianapolis on a day off from training. Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears called the incident “100% preventable” and emphasized the impact of poor choices fueled by alcohol and firearms. The sentencing brings some closure to a case that highlighted the consequences of impulsive actions and violence.
