Millions of Nike shoes stolen in train heists across California and Arizona

In 2025, train heists have become a new trend, with robbers targeting valuable goods such as Nike shoes and electronics. These heists, reminiscent of the Wild West, involve thieves sneaking onto trains, slashing air hoses, forcing the locomotives to stop, and then quickly unloading the merchandise onto waiting trucks. The majority of these thefts have occurred in California and Arizona, with more than 60 people facing charges in connection with the robberies. The heists are carried out in isolated areas to allow the thieves time to escape, making it difficult for law enforcement to catch them in the act.

These heists involve a quick and efficient process of scouting for valuable cargo, boarding trains, cutting through containers, and forcing the trains to stop before unloading the stolen goods. The stolen merchandise includes unreleased Nike shoes, with one particular style worth over $400,000. While some arrests have been made in connection with these robberies, not all culprits have been caught, leaving train conductors and engineers vulnerable in remote areas.

Felipe Avalos-Mejia has been identified as a possible ringleader of these train heists, operating in Phoenix and Los Angeles. Investigators allege that Avalos-Mejia had a network of scouts helping him select trains to target and provided support to burglary crews. Police raids connected to Avalos-Mejia have resulted in multiple arrests and the recovery of millions of dollars worth of stolen merchandise. Despite these efforts, train heists continue to be a growing concern for law enforcement agencies, highlighting the need for increased security measures to protect freight transportation.
