Anita Anand changes her mind, decides to run in 2025 federal elections | Global News

Indo-Canadian Cabinet Minister Anita Anand has announced that she will be contesting the 2025 Federal elections, just 45 days after initially opting out of the race. Anand, who currently holds the position of Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, is expected to be the nominee for the ruling Liberal Party in the Oakville East riding. This decision comes following encouragement from former central banker Mark Carney, who is a leading contender to head the Liberal Party after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau steps down.

Anand was first elected to the House of Commons in 2019 and has since held various important positions within the government, including Minister of Public Services and Procurement, Minister of National Defence, and President of the Treasury Board. In December 2022, she was appointed as Minister of Transport and Internal Trade.

Anand, the first Hindu to become a Cabinet Minister in Canada, was initially considered a potential candidate for leadership but announced in January that she would not be seeking to succeed Trudeau. Her decision to re-enter the race comes amidst significant political developments within the Liberal Party.

Anand, a former law professor at the University of Toronto, has played a crucial role in the Canadian government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic by overseeing the procurement of vaccine supplies for the country. With her extensive experience and background, Anand is expected to be a strong contender in the upcoming elections.
