Matthew Hertgen, former college soccer player, charged in brother’s death

Matthew Hertgen, a former college soccer player, appeared in court following his arrest for the killing of his younger brother and a cat in Princeton, New Jersey. The judge rescheduled the pretrial detention hearing to allow for evidence gathering. Hertgen faces charges of first-degree murder, weapons offenses, and animal cruelty. He called 911 to report a fire and dead body at an apartment complex, where police found his brother’s mutilated body. Joseph Hertgen, a soccer player for the University of Michigan, was pronounced dead at the scene. Both brothers were star players at Toms River North High School. If found guilty, Matthew Hertgen could face 30 years to life in prison.
