Men’s Basketball loses in overtime to Arkansas, final score 86-81

Arkansas – Guard Tre Johnson set a record for the University of Texas by scoring 39 points in a game against Arkansas. Despite his impressive performance, Texas ultimately lost to Arkansas in an overtime thriller with a final score of 86-81. This marked the first time the two former Southwest Conference rivals had met in Fayetteville since 2010.

Johnson’s 39-point performance broke the previous freshman single-game scoring record of 37 points, previously held by NBA star Kevin Durant. Johnson also had a career-high seven three-pointers in the game. Senior Arthur Kaluma added a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Despite trailing by as much as 14 points in the second half, Texas fought back to force overtime, where Johnson scored all 12 of Texas’ points in the extra period. However, Arkansas went on an 8-0 run to secure the victory. This was Texas’ first overtime game of the season, and they now have a 2-5 record in overtime games against Arkansas.

The game featured five lead changes and four ties, with Texas outscoring Arkansas in the second half to force overtime. Texas had a slight edge in rebounding and received solid contributions from other players like Kaluma, Jordan Pope, Devon Pryor, and Kadin Shedrick.

Texas will look to bounce back from this loss when they host Georgia on Saturday, March 1, with the game set to be televised nationally on ESPN2. Despite Johnson’s record-breaking performance, Texas will be eager to secure a crucial win in their next game.
