A weakened storm, formerly known as Tropical Cyclone Alfred, made landfall in eastern Australia resulting in one fatality and leaving hundreds of thousands without power. The storm brought heavy rains and dangerous winds to the region, with one man dying near Dorrigo when his car was swept away by floodwaters. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns warned that the emergency was not over, as rivers were full and heavy rain was expected to continue.
More than 333,000 customers were without power in areas affected by the storm, and emergency responders conducted numerous flood rescues in the region. Thirteen army personnel were injured in a crash near Lismore while assisting with storm-related operations.
Numerous communities remained under evacuation orders, with fears that heavy rainfall could lead to floodwaters overtopping levees in Lismore. Officials were working to coordinate recovery efforts in the aftermath of the storm. The response to the storm was being closely watched after criticism of the authorities’ handling of the 2022 floods in the same region.
The storm’s impact was significant, with communities at risk of major flooding and many facing power outages. The Australian Defense Force was involved in rescue operations, and officials were working to prevent further damage as the storm continued to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the area.
