The Taliban’s crackdown on women’s rights includes mandatory face coverings, restrictions on travel without a male guardian, and bans on women in public spaces like parks and gyms. Girls are only allowed to attend school until the age of 12, and women are prohibited from pursuing medical training. Women’s radio stations have been shut down, and NGOs are not allowed to employ women.
On International Women’s Day, women in Afghanistan continue to face oppression and uncertainty about their future. For Lima and others, AI serves as a way to combat loneliness and connect with virtual friends. The regime’s oppressive policies have left women with few outlets for self-expression and personal growth.
