Texas A&M System appoints Texas Comptroller as new chancellor – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar has been announced as the sole finalist to succeed John Sharp as the chancellor of The Texas A&M University System. Hegar, a Texas A&M graduate, has a background in politics, having served in the Texas House of Representatives and Senate before becoming comptroller in 2014.

The university’s Board of Regents unanimously selected Hegar, praising his understanding of the system’s impact on Texas and his commitment to excellence. The appointment is pending a 21-day comment period before being finalized.

In a statement, Hegar expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and vowed to uphold the university system’s core values while working towards enhancing student experiences and economic opportunities in Texas.

John Sharp, the current chancellor, announced his decision to step down in June 2025, citing a desire to “always go out on top” after achieving many accomplishments during his tenure, including acquiring a law school and establishing a high-tech campus for defense research and testing.

Hegar commended Sharp for his leadership and expressed excitement about working with the university’s Board of Regents, faculty, staff, and students to build on the system’s legacy of excellence and ensure its continued success. The transition is expected to bring new opportunities for growth and innovation within The Texas A&M University System.
