The recent Netflix series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” has renewed interest in the infamous Menendez brothers case, where they were convicted of killing their parents in 1989. This renewed interest was seen when a teenager in Wisconsin allegedly murdered his mother, stating he was inspired by the Menendez brothers. The teenager, who was on medication for anxiety, watched a Netflix documentary about the Menendez brothers before carrying out the murder.
The teenager planned to kill both his parents but ultimately only killed his mother with a dumbbell and a knife. After the murder, he reached out to a friend to call the police and ultimately confessed to the officers. He has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide and is being represented by the Wisconsin State Public Defender’s Office.
In a separate development, the Menendez brothers have filed a habeas corpus petition challenging their murder convictions, citing new evidence. However, the Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman has opposed this petition, stating that the new evidence does not meet the rigorous standards required to vacate their convictions or conduct a retrial.
Despite the opposition, there has been a growing call for the release of the Menendez brothers from prison, with their family expressing love and forgiveness towards them. The case continues to spark debate and interest in the criminal justice system and the possibility of revisiting past convictions based on new evidence.
