Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has criticized the United States for abandoning the nuclear deal and imposing sanctions, questioning the value of talks. In response to a letter from US President Donald Trump seeking negotiations on a new deal to restrain Iran’s nuclear program, Khamenei described the offer as a deception aimed at shaping global opinion. Referring to the 2015 nuclear accord that was torn up by Trump, Khamenei questioned the point of negotiating with a party that has proven unreliable. He warned that negotiating with the Trump administration would only tighten the knot of sanctions and increase pressure on Iran.
Iran has denied seeking to develop nuclear weapons, with Khamenei stating that if they wanted to build such weapons, the US would not be able to stop them. However, Iran’s stock of uranium enriched to close to weapons-grade level has increased, as reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Amidst these developments, six members of the United Nations Security Council requested a closed-door meeting to discuss Iran’s nuclear activities, which Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticized as casting doubt on the goodwill of the states involved. Araghchi also announced upcoming talks with European nations involved in the 2015 nuclear pact, while China and Russia are set to hold discussions with Iranian officials in Beijing on the issue.
As tensions continue to escalate over Iran’s nuclear activities and the prospect of negotiations, the international community remains divided on how to address the situation.
