Ukraine’s Optimism for Peace Dampened by Deep Skepticism

After intense negotiations, Ukraine has agreed to a 30-day cease-fire with Russia proposed by the Trump administration. The resumption of American military assistance was confirmed only after the Ukrainian delegation was already on their way back home. This assistance, including weapons deliveries and intelligence sharing, was seen as a positive step in repairing the strained relationship between Kyiv and Washington.

President Zelensky expressed gratitude to President Trump for the constructive dialogue between the two teams. The suspension of U.S. military aid and intelligence sharing after a disastrous meeting led to weeks of tension between the two allies. Ukrainian officials were coached on how to communicate effectively with the Americans during the talks in Jeddah.

It took over eight hours of discussions to reach an agreement, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio stating that the burden is now on Russia to end the war. President Zelensky echoed this sentiment, urging Russia to show whether they are ready to end the conflict or continue it.

Despite the agreement for a 30-day cease-fire, there is skepticism in Ukraine about whether Russia will honor it based on past violations of similar agreements. Some Ukrainians fear that the U.S. has shifted its allegiance towards Russia and that the peace may only be temporary. Overall, there is cautious optimism that this agreement could provide a brief respite for the war-torn country.
