An explosion inside a maintenance hole at Texas Tech University’s campus in Lubbock led to fires and power outages, prompting school officials to issue evacuation orders for multiple buildings and cancel classes for the week. The explosion occurred in the Engineering Key section of campus on Wednesday evening, with no injuries reported. Students were advised to stay away from the area.
Texas Tech University President Lawrence Schovanec expressed gratitude for the support received and announced an immediate start to spring break in response to the incident. Power to the campus was shut down for repairs, and all personnel were asked to avoid the campus grounds. Firefighters responded to reports of a gas leak and found multiple manholes with active fires.
Videos of the scene showed a heavy firefighter presence and flames coming from the maintenance holes. The cause of the explosion remains unclear. With over 40,000 students, Texas Tech University is located on 1,800 acres in West Texas. Despite the disruption caused by the incident, authorities assured that no injuries were reported, and an investigation into the cause of the explosion is ongoing.
