Meta Attempts to Restrict Future Sales of Former Employee’s Critical Memoir

Meta recently scored a legal victory against a former employee, Sarah Wynn-Williams, who published a tell-all memoir titled “Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism.” The book made explosive allegations of sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior by Meta executives.

An arbitrator granted Meta’s request to temporarily prohibit Wynn-Williams from promoting or further distributing the book, citing potential violations of a nondisparagement contract she signed while working for the company. The parties are now set to go into private arbitration.

In addition to halting book promotions, Wynn-Williams must refrain from making disparaging comments and retract previous negative statements. Meta has denied the allegations in the book, calling them a mix of outdated claims and false accusations.

The publisher, Flatiron Books, has not commented on the situation. Meta’s response to Wynn-Williams’s book is one of their most forceful public rebuttals to a former employee’s tell-all memoir. Meta executives have labeled many of the claims in the book as exaggerated or false.

It remains to be seen whether Meta’s efforts to suppress Wynn-Williams’s book will ultimately succeed, given legal considerations regarding the right of employees to discuss workplace harassment issues. Meta has previously stated that it does not silence employees on issues of harassment or discrimination and prohibits retaliation against personnel speaking up on these issues.
