After a disappointing first season in the SEC, the Texas men’s basketball team has swiftly found a new head coach to replace Rodney Terry, who was fired on Sunday after nearly three seasons. Sean Miller, most recently at Xavier, has been chosen as Terry’s successor.
Terry took over the Texas team after Chris Beard was fired due to a domestic violence accusation, leading the team to a second-place finish in the Big 12 and an Elite Eight appearance. However, the team failed to sustain that success under Terry’s permanent leadership.
Miller, who recently ended his second stint at Xavier, has a successful coaching record with multiple NCAA tournament appearances. At Arizona, Miller faced controversy surrounding the FBI’s corruption investigation into college basketball, but he has a proven track record.
Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte had considered hiring Miller in the past, but Terry’s initial success with the Longhorns put off the decision. Now, with Miller in charge, Texas hopes to revive its basketball program that has struggled to reach the same heights it achieved in the early 2000s.
With resources at his disposal, Miller will aim to lead Texas back to the Final Four and beyond, breaking the string of early tournament exits that have plagued the program in recent years. This move could signal a new chapter for Texas basketball under Miller’s leadership.
