Hubert Kos guides Texas Longhorns to 16th men’s swimming/diving national championship

Led by 2024 Paris Olympic Gold medalist Hubert Kos, the Texas Longhorns men’s swimming and diving team has secured their 16th national championship title. Kos had a standout performance, setting two NCAA records and winning three medals in the meet. Among his achievements, Kos set the 200-yard backstroke record with a time of 1:34.21 and the 100-yard backstroke record with a time of 43.20. In addition, he won the 200 individual medley in 1:37.91.

Rex Maurer also contributed to Texas’ success by winning the 500 freestyle and 400 individual medley events. This victory marks Texas’ dominance in men’s swimming and diving over the past four decades, having won a third of all national titles since 1981.

This championship win is particularly significant as it is the first under the leadership of coach Bob Bowman, who took over after legendary coach Eddie Reese’s retirement. Bowman now holds the distinction of being the first swimming and diving coach to win back-to-back men’s national championships. Texas diving coach Matt Scoggins also added to the team’s success by winning his 11th NCAA title.

Despite controversy surrounding Florida’s initial win in the 200 medley relay, Texas ultimately emerged victorious, securing six individual event wins and one relay win. The team’s outstanding performance solidifies their legacy as a powerhouse in collegiate men’s swimming and diving.
