Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a legal petition to question Dallas Independent School District officials under oath as part of an investigation into the district’s policy on transgender athletes. This comes after Paxton’s office began looking into allegations that the district encouraged parents to alter their child’s birth certificates to allow them to compete in sports matching their identifying gender. Changes to gender on birth certificates are illegal in Texas but can still be done in other states.
Paxton’s petition seeks to depose several Dallas ISD officials, including the district’s LGBT Youth Program Coordinator, superintendent, and school board members. The attorney general has vowed to hold accountable those involved in what he calls a “systematic effort” to circumvent Texas law.
The investigation was prompted by an undercover video published by Accuracy in Media, which also led to inquiries into the Irving Independent School District. Gov. Greg Abbott called for an investigation into Irving ISD after a similar video surfaced, and the district administrator featured in the video later resigned.
In the midst of these investigations, The Texas Tribune is gearing up for its 15th annual Tribune Festival in downtown Austin, where attendees will engage in conversations about the future of education, the economy, health care, energy, technology, public safety, culture, and more. The event is presented by JPMorganChase and promises to be a platform for breakout ideas and discussions on Texas politics and beyond.
