Severe storms have wreaked havoc on several islands in Greece, particularly in the Cyclades chain in the central Aegean Sea. Islands such as Paros and Mykonos have been hit hard, with overturned cars and debris scattered across the islands after hailstorms and heavy rainfall. The worst of the storms was experienced on Crete, with the heaviest rainfall and flooding reported in the area.
Rescue crews on Crete had to rescue seven people from vehicles trapped in floodwaters, while rockslides and road closures were reported on the island. The National Observatory of Athens recorded the highest rainfall near the port of Chania. Rhodes faced gale-force winds that caused trees to topple and vehicles to be damaged.
Authorities on the affected islands have requested emergency government assistance to address the road and infrastructure damage caused by the storms. As a precautionary measure, schools were shut on several islands including Paros, Mykonos, Rhodes, Kos, Kalymnos, Symi, and Tilos.
This extreme weather comes just weeks after a rare earthquake swarm forced thousands of people to flee Santorini and nearby islands. The storms have had a significant impact on the popular holiday destination known for its beaches and whitewashed houses. The ferocious storms sent cars floating into the sea and flooded homes and businesses, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.
