New Maryland head coach, Buzz Williams, comes from Texas A&M | Sports

Maryland announced the hiring of Buzz Williams as the new head coach of the men’s basketball team, following the departure of former coach Kevin Willard to Villanova. Athletic director Colleen Sorem expressed excitement about Williams’ track record of success and his dedication to building Maryland basketball. Williams, who most recently coached at Texas A&M, led the Aggies to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and was named SEC Coach of the Year in 2022-23.

In a statement, Texas A&M thanked Williams for his service and expressed optimism for the future of their basketball program. Williams, with a coaching record that includes stops at New Orleans, Marquette, and Virginia Tech, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead Maryland’s prestigious basketball program.

Meanwhile, Willard, who had a successful tenure at Maryland with a 27-9 record this season, left to pursue other opportunities after expressing a need for fundamental changes within the program. Maryland officials made efforts to retain Willard, offering a contract extension and other incentives, but ultimately respected his decision to move on.

The transition marks a new era for Maryland basketball under Williams’ leadership, with high expectations for success and a commitment to upholding the program’s storied history. Terp Nation is eager to see what Williams will bring to the team as they aim to continue their winning tradition.
