Local Pastor Opposes Superintendent Candidate, Sparks Controversy
A Deer Park pastor, Doug Harris, has stirred up controversy by publicly opposing Dr. Tiffany Regan’s candidacy for Deer Park ISD superintendent. In a recent sermon, Pastor Harris criticized Dr. Regan’s personal life, warning his congregation about the potential influence of “wokeism, liberalism, and sexual immorality” if she were to lead the school district. Encouraging church members to voice their opposition to the school board, Pastor Harris expressed concerns about Dr. Regan’s morality despite acknowledging her qualifications and experience.
Dr. Regan, who has a long history with Deer Park ISD and recently served as assistant superintendent for instruction, was named the lone finalist for the superintendent position following a rigorous selection process. The school board has opened up a period for public comment until April 4th in response to the widespread discussion surrounding Dr. Regan’s candidacy.
In a statement, School Board President Jason Cable defended the board’s decision to select Dr. Regan as the lone finalist, emphasizing her leadership, experience, and commitment to student success as key factors in the decision-making process. Cable stressed the importance of adhering to state and federal employment laws that prohibit discrimination based on personal characteristics unrelated to job performance.
Despite efforts to reach Dr. Regan and Pastor Harris for comment, both parties have yet to respond to media inquiries. The controversy surrounding Dr. Regan’s candidacy continues to fuel debate within the Deer Park community, with differing perspectives emerging on the qualifications, integrity, and best interests of the school district.
