This is the epicenter of a spreading outbreak that has nearly 500 cases in Texas. The latest death was a school-aged child who was not vaccinated. Kennedy emphasized the importance of the MMR vaccine in preventing the spread of measles, offering support and resources to Texas and other affected areas.
The outbreak is the worst in Texas in over 30 years, with almost all cases being unvaccinated individuals. Kennedy has faced pressure from Senator Bill Cassidy to urge the public to get vaccinated. Kennedy also advocated for the use of vitamin A in treating measles, but Covenant Children’s Hospital in Lubbock warned against excessive consumption of vitamin A, stating that it could have adverse effects.
Measles was declared eradicated in the US in 2000, thanks to a successful vaccination program. The CDC has updated its guidance to include vitamin A treatment, but health officials caution against relying solely on this method. The World Health Organization has used vitamin A in Africa during outbreaks, but this strategy may not be applicable in areas like West Texas with different health profiles.
