The Texas Tech sports teams had a busy weekend with softball, baseball, and women’s tennis in action. The softball team had a perfect weekend at home, sweeping a three-game series against Utah to remain atop the Big 12 standings. Star pitcher NiJaree Canady was instrumental in the victories, picking up wins in both games of a doubleheader on Friday and a complete game shutout on Saturday. Texas Tech baseball, on the other hand, dropped two of three games to Cincinnati, continuing their struggles after sweeping their first Big 12 series. The women’s tennis team continued their dominance by defeating Cincinnati 4-0 to move to 17-2 overall and 10-1 in the Big 12.
Former Texas Tech baseball player Hunter Dobbins made his MLB debut for the Boston Red Sox on Sunday, picking up the win after pitching five impressive innings against the St. Louis Cardinals. Dobbins, who played for Texas Tech from 2019-2020, has been working his way through the minor leagues in the Red Sox’s system since 2022 and finally broke into the majors as a reliever.
The Red Raiders softball team will face Houston next weekend, while the baseball team will play New Mexico before hosting Baylor. The women’s tennis squad will take on Arizona State in their next match. Overall, it was a mixed weekend for Texas Tech sports teams, with some impressive wins and tough losses across the board.
