Car dealerships in Northern California, particularly Honda and Mazda franchises, have seen a surge in sales of used Teslas. Ken Harvey, the owner of multiple dealerships, has been picking up pre-owned Teslas at auctions and selling them at surprisingly affordable prices. Thanks to a federal tax credit for purchasing used electric vehicles priced under $25,000, some customers are able to get a Model 3 sedan for under $20,000.
The increase in used Tesla sales can be attributed partly to the backlash against Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO and his connection to President Trump. Many Tesla owners have been selling their vehicles in protest against Musk’s political activities, including some who were once admirers of the brand.
In recent weeks, protests have occurred outside of Tesla showrooms, and some vehicles and buildings have been damaged. This has led to an increase in the number of used Teslas for sale, with some dealerships seeing a rise in trades of Teslas for other types of electric vehicles.
Despite concerns about Musk’s political affiliations, the demand for affordable Teslas in California remains strong, particularly among ride-share drivers and first-time buyers. The used Tesla market continues to thrive, providing an opportunity for dealerships in the area to capitalize on the growing interest in electric vehicles.
