Soccer coach, Mario Edgardo Garcia-Aquino, has been charged with murder of 13-year-old Oscar “Omar” Hernandez and assault of a 16-year-old boy in Southern California. Hernandez was found dead in a wooded area in Oxnard, and Garcia-Aquino was also charged with assault with intent to commit a lewd act in a separate case. Los Angeles County District Attorney, Nathan Hochman, expressed sympathy for the Hernandez family and vowed to bring justice. Garcia-Aquino could face life in prison or the death penalty if convicted. The LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division and the FBI conducted a search that confirmed the remains found in Oxnard belonged to Omar. A previous incident of sexual assault in 2024 was also charged against Garcia-Aquino. Omar’s school held a vigil to honor him, where loved ones remembered him as cheerful, funny, and kind. His mother, Gladys Bautista, expressed her devastation over his death and his unfulfilled dreams. Students who knew Omar organized events to remember him and show support for his family during this difficult time. The community is encouraged to come forward with any information regarding the case to ensure justice for Omar and prevent further victimization.
