Faith leaders in North Texas denounce Abbott’s EPIC City probes

The Council on American-Islamic Relations is speaking out against Governor Greg Abbott’s investigation of EPIC City, a housing development being proposed by the East Plano Islamic Center. The center, known as EPIC, purchased 402 acres of land in eastern Collin County with plans to build a mosque and 1,000 homes, townhomes, and apartments. However, Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton have launched multiple investigations targeting EPIC, claiming that the project as proposed is not allowed in Texas. The director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Dallas-Fort Worth office accuses Abbott and Paxton of spreading misinformation and targeting their Muslim constituents. They believe the investigations are based on hateful intentions and are violating the rights of the community. In addition, the Texas Funeral Service Commission sent a cease and desist letter to EPIC, ordering them to stop all illegal funeral service operations. The Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Dallas-Fort Worth Jewish Voice for Peace have both spoken out in support of EPIC and against the actions of the governor and attorney general. This controversy highlights the ongoing tensions between religious groups and political leaders in Collin County.
