In Dallas, there is a concerning trend of Black women being more likely to die from giving birth. According to a recent report from the CDC, Black women in the US are three and a half times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes compared to other races. This is due to factors such as poor prenatal care and lack of postpartum support, as well as hidden mental health issues that often go untreated.
Viola’s House, a nonprofit in South Dallas, is working to address these disparities in maternal health outcomes. The organization focuses on providing support for pregnant women facing unplanned pregnancies, with a specific emphasis on mental health along with other social determinants of health. Founder Thana Hickman recently traveled to Washington D.C. to advocate for the services and funding needed for Black maternal health.
In an effort to raise awareness and mobilize action in the local community, Viola’s House is hosting a call to action conversation with United Way, Parkland Hospital, and other concerned organizations in Dallas. The goal is to bring attention to the issue and work towards solutions to improve maternal health outcomes for Black women in the area.
This initiative comes in response to the urgent need for change and support for Black mothers in Dallas. By addressing the underlying systemic issues contributing to maternal morbidity, Viola’s House and its partners hope to make a real difference in the lives of Black women and their children.
