A recent clash during a debate for a Fort Worth City Council race continued to cause tension as candidates were invited to meet with the public at a candidate forum. The conflict arose between District 8 incumbent Chris Nettles and challenger Payton Jackson, leading to both candidates filing police reports after a physical altercation during a previous event. At the recent candidate forum at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, only Nettles answered questions, with Jackson briefly present and another candidate, Arthur McCoy, absent.
The forum organizers claimed Jackson did not RSVP, while Jackson stated she verbally confirmed her attendance. The recent incident between Nettles and Jackson was revisited, with Nettles assuring the community that the race would continue as normal. Jackson expressed feeling unfairly treated and adopting a “villain role” following the confrontation. McCoy, who was frustrated by the incident, decided to no longer attend forums due to the community’s disconnection.
Councilman Nettles and Jackson both anticipate updates on the police reports filed after the altercation will be available later this week. The tension between the candidates has raised concerns about the integrity of the race. Despite the conflict, the candidates are continuing to campaign for the City Council position in Fort Worth. The ongoing conflict between the candidates has drawn attention to the need for unity and resolution in the local community as the election approaches.
