Wink Martindale, the legendary game show host known for hosting hit shows such as “Gambit” and “Tic-Tac-Dough,” has passed away at the age of 91. Martindale, who had been battling lymphoma for a year, was known for his genial personality and his ability to connect with contestants and audiences.
Throughout his career, Martindale hosted numerous game shows and radio programs, becoming a household name in the television industry. He was also known for his work in radio, where he began his career as a disc jockey at the age of 17.
Martindale’s most successful game shows included “Gambit,” which debuted in 1972, and “Tic-Tac-Dough,” which ran until 1985. He also hosted a Las Vegas-based revival of “Gambit” in the 1980s.
In addition to his work in television, Martindale had a successful music career, reaching No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with a cover of “Deck of Cards” in 1959. He later formed his own production company, Wink Martindale Enterprises, to develop and produce his own game shows.
In his later years, Martindale returned to his radio roots, hosting programs such as “The 100 Greatest Christmas Hits of All Time” and “The History of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” He also appeared in a KFC ad campaign with actor Rob Lowe in 2017.
Martindale is survived by his second wife of 49 years, Sandy, and his children Lisa, Madelyn, and Laura, as well as numerous grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Wink Jr., from his first marriage.
The entertainment industry has lost a true icon with the passing of Wink Martindale, whose charm, talent, and warm personality will be remembered by generations of fans.
