Cornyn urges DOJ probe of EPIC City, as Paxton broadens state investigation

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) is calling for a federal investigation into a controversial development near Josephine, Texas, raising concerns about possible discrimination against non-Muslim religious groups. This move coincides with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton expanding his investigation into the development known as EPIC City. Cornyn’s letter to the Department of Justice cites worries that the planned community of thousands of Muslims could violate the constitutional rights of Jews and Christians by potentially excluding them from living there.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has criticized Cornyn’s request, stating it promotes Islamophobic stereotypes and may violate the rights of Muslim communities. CAIR called for an investigation into Texas officials for targeting Muslims for political gain, rather than targeting potential violations of federal law by the EPIC City development.

EPIC City is a planned development in Collin and Hunt counties inspired by inclusivity and diversity, with a mosque, homes, schools, businesses, and parks. The development has faced scrutiny from state leaders, including Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Rangers, as well as regulatory agencies, which developers and the East Plano Islamic Center deem as racially motivated.

The upcoming 2026 U.S. Senate race in Texas has added tension to the situation, with Paxton challenging Cornyn for his seat. Paxton’s campaign focuses on conservative values and criticizes Cornyn for perceived disloyalty to former President Trump. Cornyn has emphasized his conservative track record and stated his support for Trump. Amidst the contentious race, EPIC City remains under investigation, with CAIR and developers maintaining that there is no evidence of wrongdoing, while state officials press for accountability.
