Family and friends are preparing to say their final goodbyes to fallen Dallas police officer Darron Burks, who was tragically killed while on duty. The funeral service will be held at Watermark Church on Saturday morning, with a viewing from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life service. A private burial ceremony will then take place. Burks, a rookie officer, was shot and killed in a disturbing act of violence while sitting in his patrol car in Oak Cliff. Police Chief Eddie Garcia described the incident as an “execution.” The funeral is expected to be emotional as officers from around the country come to honor Burks’ service and sacrifice. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has approved flying flags at half-staff in Dallas in honor of Burks. Burks, who transitioned from being a math teacher to a police officer, is remembered as an excellent educator and mentor to many students during his time at Texas Can Academy. Run It Up Dallas will hold a memorial run for Burks, and a vigil was held in his honor at Paul Quinn College. The community has shown an outpouring of support and respect for the fallen officer, with a memorial set up outside DPD headquarters. The tragic shooting of Officer Burks led to a chase resulting in the death of the suspect, Corey Cobb-Bey. Officer Karissa David was injured in the incident but is recovering, while Officer Jamie Farmer has been released from the hospital.
