Texas lawmakers are seeking reimbursement for the billions spent on border security during the previous presidential administration. With President Donald Trump back in office, Texas budget proposals have been released, including $6.5 billion for border security. Despite expectations for a lower amount due to Trump’s focus on border security, the allocation was surprising to some experts.
During President Joe Biden’s term, the state spent $11.1 billion on border barriers, National Guard deployment, and state troopers, as well as migrant transportation. Governor Abbott is seeking reimbursement from Congress for this expenditure. Senator John Cornyn is also working to get the state reimbursed but has not disclosed a specific amount. State lawmakers continue to prioritize border security funding in the budget, despite concerns from some democrat lawmakers about the use of taxpayer money.
While Republicans argue for continued spending to maintain gains made in border security, Democrats urge federal leaders to pass immigration reform instead of relying on state funds. The state has conducted multiple investigations into the spending, revealing millions of dollars spent on migrant transportation. Governor Abbott has sent a letter to Congress requesting reimbursement.
