Texas admits to five NCAA violations linked to sports betting; scandal involves two football players

The Texas athletic department has self-reported five NCAA violations related to sports betting that occurred between July and November 2024. The violations involved two football players, a non-student athlete associated with the women’s tennis team, a student assistant, and an athletic department employee. These individuals collectively wagered $14,885.76 on the daily fantasy sports website PrizePicks, which is legal in Texas. NCAA rules prohibit players and staff from betting on sports in NCAA-sponsored championships.

In response to the violations, Texas utilized a service called ProhiBet to monitor sports betting activity. The service cross-checks individuals’ personal data with online sportsbook information. The SEC has mandated schools to use ProhiBet technology since the 2023-24 season. Once the impermissible wagers were discovered, the non-student athlete was found to have bet on Texas sporting events and was no longer associated with the athletic department.

One of the football players involved was briefly deemed ineligible but was later reinstated after paying back the value of the wagers to charity. The other player with a reported sports betting problem left Texas and ended his college football career. The athletic department did not penalize him. In total, 50 sports betting violations were reported to the NCAA in 2023 and 100 in 2024. Texas’ self-reporting actions demonstrate a commitment to transparency and compliance with NCAA regulations.
